Kane "bio" from http://www.zodiacciphers.com/lawrence-kane.html
Lawrence Kane has always been closely linked with the disappearance of Donna Lass, last seen at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel on September 6th 1970, on account of the fact he worked in the same building. One person who was convinced of Kane's guilt in the killings was Harvey Hines, a retired law enforcement officer who noted a close comparison between the Zodiac letters and Lawrence Kane's handwriting, as well as a whole host of circumstantial evidence he has compiled over the years.

His alleged involvement in the abduction of Kathleen Johns, who had her car disabled by an unknown assailant on March 22nd 1970, before being driven around under duress for a period of time before she managed to escape with her infant daughter across a field, and later identified her attacker as the same man portrayed in a composite sketch of the Zodiac, which hung on the wall of a police station in Patterson.

According to Harvey Hines, Kathleen Johns would later in a 1980's interview, claim her assailant that night was none other than Larry Kane. Also Pam Huckaby, the sister of Darlene Ferrin who tragically died at Blue Rock Springs Park, stated that Kane had been trailing her sister in the run up to that fateful night on July 4th 1969.

In the prelude to these events, Larry Kane suffered brain damage in 1962, after a serious car crash and doctors diagnosed an inability to control his urges for self-gratification and was subsequently arrested several times as a 'peeping Tom' in the preceding months running up to the first confirmed Zodiac attack.

He would have had a rudimentary knowledge of coding, after his brief time in the United States Naval reserves in 1943, but was this sufficient to produce a complex understanding of cipher techniques or just the appetizer for what was to come later. So, along with the Modesto abduction of Kathleen Johns and the Donna Lass disappearance at South Lake Tahoe, did Larry Kane have the means and opportunity to commit the five murders at four locations attributed to the Zodiac Killer, the answer is yes and is one of the more credible suspects.

Paul Stine, the Zodiac Killer's final confirmed victim had arrived for work at the Yellow Cab Company at 8.45 pm, taking a fare from Pier 64 to the San Francisco Air Terminal. His most likely route thereafter was US Route 101 taking him back to the busy theater district at the Mason and Geary Street intersection, where he probably felt he was likely to pick up an unscheduled fare. At this point the assistant traffic manager of the Yellow Cab Co, Leroy Sweet instructed Paul Stine of a regular pick-up at 500 9th Avenue. This was the last contact with Paul Stine, just prior to picking up his final deadly fare, that took him on the short journey to the corner of Washington and Cherry at 9.57 pm, where he was mercilessly gunned down, execution style to the right side of his head.

During this time-frame Lawrence Kane lived at 217 Eddy Street, San Francisco, not far from the pick up area at the theater district. Here is the distance (approx 7 minutes on foot) from this address to Mason and Geary Street on Google Maps.

There are a lot more circumstantial elements drawing Larry Kane into the fold of the known credible suspect list, but this does not make Lawrence Kane the Zodiac, no, it merely associates him as a suspect worthy of consideration.

On April 20th 1970, a cipher was sent to the San Francisco chronicle which contained only 13 symbols known as the 'My Name Is...Letter' and Harvey Hines believes he has decoded it to reveal the name Lawrence Kane.

You can read more about Kane at http://www.zodiacciphers.com/lawrence-kane.html

Big thanks to Alex Lewis as well as Galaxie500 for all of the great work they have done with Kane. He is definitely one of my top three suspects.

There was a Thos (Thomas?) Kane in the directory that says he was a cab driver. Is there a list of Kane's known relatives anywhere?

Thanks. Looks like he is the only one of the kids that made it to adulthood. I wonder if that had any sort of affect on Larry.

Galaxie, would you happen to have a list of known addresses on Kane? Also, if you have access to a 1958 New Orleans directory, can you look and see if there was a Martin Newalk or Edward Newalk listed?

Thanks!! I just saw something a couple hours about Georgia, but can't remember what it was now. It had something to do with his ex-wife Marie, I think.

Was Johnny Johnston famous? I'm just asking because Kane seems the type to try brushing shoulders with hot shots if he had the chance.

$17,000 in jewelry was a lot back then.

What is a "shake and shingle man?" I think this is the first I have seen of him using "Kay" as his last name.

Several articles refer to the fact that Kaye was employed as a "shingle salesman." I'm pretty sure "shake and shingle" was an additional reference to that.

While living in Utica, NY, (1950-1951) Kane founded and presided over a roofing and siding firm by the name of Outer Walls, INC. There were a number of court and Better Business Bureau filings instituted against the firm charging various infractions (debts, breach of contract, etc.), none of which (to the best of my knowledge) gained any traction. If I get the opportunity, I'd like to see if those filings still exist in an archive somewhere; it'd be interesting to get some insight into Kane's business practices.

Kane was not in need of the Charm to woo the Ladies and journalists who wrote about Kaye's little jewel thefts and other things do so by referring to Lawrence as "The Handsome Suspect" in one article, while another writer describes Him as "Handsome and Flashy"

Kaye was said to have had Law Enforcement in Hysterical laughter as upon searching His property The Police found something that was both extremely legal, and extreme;y funny. A giant mug was discovered with the inscription "To Larry, the Most Handsome Man in The World, Thank You from the Women of America" or words along those lines.

But Kane being described as Handsome by Journalists who are writing as Impartial reporters is interesting because they must therefore have seen Lawrence as very good looking to describe Him the way they did.

I saw those press articles referring to "The Handsome Suspect, Larry Kaye. . ." and My mind flashed back to the three Girl sunbathing out of the Island who described a Male watching them who'd look away if they looked over at Him. The report states the Girls described this Man as about 40 yrs of age,  medium build and Quote"Good Looking."

That mug is hilarious. Wish we could find a picture of him holding it up near his face and smiling. That would be classic! Kane would have been right around the age those sunbathers described too right?

I wonder why Larry left NY to begin with. A "playboy" with prominent friends and I assume he was making decent money, he probably had to have left due to troubles with the law.

He maintained an address in NYC concurrent to his time in New Orleans. The absolute latest he can be placed in NY is 1960, the same year he left Louisiana.

No no Chad, Larry was a Backward recluse and a nobody. He was a friendless moron who stayed in with His Mother 24/7 and certainly couldn't plan a piss up in a brewery.
