Possible links between Kane and ALA and Manalli??? Empty Possible links between Kane and ALA and Manalli???

Post by ophion1031 August 4th 2016, 3:27 am

This is something I have wondered for a long time but haven't really talked about it with anyone much. I have mentioned hundreds of times that I believe Fred Manalli was the one writing the letters, and I still believe that. But who was the killer? Was there more than one? I have always thought that maybe Arthur Leigh Allen was the "original" murderer but that he had someone else, Larry Kane, commit the Stine murder. There are several reasons why this could be true. There are several reasons why Allen would have someone else commit the Stine murder. Having a friend write the letters makes perfect sense. Allen could have told Manalli what to write and could have put together the codes/ciphers himself and had Manalli write those as well. But how can any of this ever be proven? It probably can't. Greysmith did mention in one of his books, if I'm not mistaken, that Manalli and Allen had known each other. I think this may have just been to make Allen look better as a suspect though. Manalli was most likely the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker murder and him knowing Allen would definitely make Allen look like a better Zodiac suspect.

What are your thought on all this?

Hi. I don't have a lot to add to the discussions here, even though I do a good bit of lurking. But since you asked for thoughts...
I like this theory. I don't know who Z is but I suspect some POIs more than others and you've named three that I feel are (individually)very good candidates. And I don't know of any evidence that would make this theory impossible.
Here's my number one problem with multiple Zs: Whether you think Z waz a genius mastermind or just somehow managed to never be caught (for Z stuff, anyway), I think we can all agree that he was pretty lucky. Although I think LE could have done better, a lot of effort and resources went into catching Z, a little bit even into our present time. I feel that the more people involved in "Project: Zodiac," the more likely that someone's luck would run out or that somebody would fuck up. So it's my personal opinion that there was probably only one Z.
But I'm open minded about it and really, what do I know?
Y'all have a good one!

Possible links between Kane and ALA and Manalli??? Empty Re: Possible links between Kane and ALA and Manalli???

He was definitely lucky after the Stine murder, which makes me wonder if it was a spur of the moment thing. But then again, the tearing of Stine's shirt seemed pre-planned.

IF Manalli was the "partner" and the letter writer, he managed to stay off of everyone's radar until the mid 70's (?) when he was questioned in Kim Allen's murder. ALA was the prime suspect, and Kane wasn't a suspect until later on. Kane seems to match the description of the man at the Hartnell/Sheppard attack, but not the Stine sketch so much. But the man spotted at the lake may have just been some pervert checking out girls. We don't know that the same man had anything to do with the attack. I personally think Z and his partner were at the lake together that day, but I have nothing to back it up. It's just a hunch really. And if Manalli was the letter writer, he would have had to been there at the lake to write on Hartnell's car door.

Another question... does Kjell Qvale somehow fit into the "team" Zodiac? I think he did hide Stine's killer in his home after the murder, but I'm not sure how deep his involvement, if any, would have went.

Does anyone have any knowledge on Greysmith's claim that ALA and Manalli knew each other? I haven't read his books in years so I don't even remember it being mentioned. Did he say they were friends or just that they knew each other?

I just remember that he mentioned in one of his books that ALA and Manalli had known each other, but I don't think he says how they knew each other or if they were friends or just acquaintances or what. Might have to flip through my books and find out exactly what he said, but I don't remember him giving any facts to back up his claim. I think that ALA and Manalli lived near each other so Greysmith made it up that they had known each other. I could be wrong, I have no idea.
