CLOVERDALE KILLING CLUES SOUGHT

A San Jose girl found murdered in Cloverdale Oct. 16 may have been picked up hitchhiking in Humboldt County, Sonoma deputies said Sunday.

Sonoma Sheriff's Detectives are seeking information from anyone who may have seen Susan Lori Dye, 19, on Thursday, October 16.

Miss Dye's strangled body was found at the side of Highway 101 near the Asti overpass in Cloverdale at 8:05 p.m.

Deputies have determined that she left Crescent City hitch-hiking at about 10 a.m. Oct. 16. She apparently purchased fruit at a fruit stand or store somewhere on the road, possibly in Eureka. Autopsy revealed that she had also eaten dinner earlier in the day, probably at a restaurant.

Miss Dye was five feet tall, about 120 pounds with brown hair below her shoulders. The picture above is a year old. Deputies said her hair was a little shorter and her face a little fuller at the time of her death.

She was wearing a medium blue ski sweater with a white strip across her upper chest, blue jeans with suede leather leg extenders and hiking boots.

Miss Dye was carrying a backpack on a frame with a sleeping bag and was accompanied by a 3-month-old German Shepard puppy. The puppy was found wandering loose in Cloverdale.

Deputies said Miss Dye was found fully clothed and had not been raped.

Miss Dye is the second woman hitch-hiker found murdered on the North Coast this month.

The strangled body of Janet Lee Bowman, a sophomore at Humboldt State University was discovered near Blue Lake October 6. She is believed to have been killed September 30 by someone who picked her up hitch-hiking in Eureka that day.

Miss Bowman may have been raped before being killed, detectives said.

There have been more than 15 reports of female hitch-hikers being raped in this county in the past two years as well as attempted murder of a woman hitch-hiker in Redcrest in January. Several young local women have also been reported missing.

Sonoma deputies have asked that anyone who saw Miss Dye Oct. 16 or has any information on her activities that day contact Detective Ernie Ballenger.....
