This is very odd. The writer was probably telling the truth about being on LSD. The number he gives, 30 58 47 678, can probably be tracked somehow. IIRC didn't someone on one of the other sites try tracking the number and was unsuccessful? What is that number called?

That number is called a selective service number, which could be used to identify the person who wrote the letters. The name has unfortunately been redacted in the FBI files. I would assume that the FBI checked this person out.
The National Archives & Records Administration in St. Louis would likely have records dating back that far, but the problem is that you cannot look up a person with their selective service number, you have to have their name.

What are the odds this is from Zodiac? I doubt Z would have sent something like this and potentially subjected himself to being investigated, right? But then again, all he did was send a letter to a draft board. He probably couldn't know that it would end up in the hands of the FBI. I'm under the impression that the FBI did look at the author of the letter and must have verified that the author was not Z.

I'm sure the FBI did check this guy out, whoever he was. I wish there was more information on this letter. Would be nice to know who wrote it.

I imagine so it is there job afterall but then again, we do know how they have 'done their job' in other matters to the case.

I wonder if the person signed their real name and if it is possible to get an unredacted version of this letter from the fbi?

Couldn't tell ya. I can maybe suggest to Morf that he try to get an unredacted version of the letter. But you would have to show proof that the person is deceased, and nobody knows the person's name so I don't know if that is possible. There has to be some way around it I would think.
