Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
Great finds Galaxie! I wish we could find details about his assault charge. I think he would have been in college or maybe just out of college at that time.
Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
The letter to santa is kinda funny. He asks for stamps and a gun! He must be Zodiac!!

I may very well be mistaken on this point, but I distinctly remember reading recently that one of the more prominent Z researchers (morf13 or seagull, IIRC) had succeeded in establishing contact with Fred's sister and was consequently able to ask her a few questions regarding Fred's candidacy as a suspect in the Z/Santa Rosa slayings. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to ask her about the assault charge...assuming that it hasn't already been done, of course.
Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
I don't think anyone else knows of the assault charge. It's the first I have heard of it and I spent a lot of time looking for anything I could find on the guy. I can ask Seagull if she could ask Manalli's sister about it. I really do think Fred was Zodiac's "partner" in the beginning and I'm almost positive he was involved in the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker murders.

Wow I didn't know Manalli played sports. He was team captain even. You have some serious skills finding newspaper articles!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Henry Manalli was Fred's great-uncle. Not certain of their relation, but given his location (Rockford, IL) and proximity in age to Fred's grandfather, it seems fairly certain that he and Fred were related. Maybe Seagull would know for sure?
A couple of things to note:
- Henry was a brothel-keeper with an extensive criminal history.
- Like Fred, he died in an auto accident.
Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
Yeah I would say that Fred had to have been a relative of Henry. How many Manalli's could there be in the booming metropolis of Rockford?
Was Henry married to a Louise Manalli? If so, they had a son born in 1920. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/rrstar/obituary.aspx?pid=170875963
I will see if I can find out what the relationship (if any) would be between Fred and Henry. I doubt it matters at all, but still worth looking at.

Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
Henry was born in Italy approximately 1888. He married Louise (approximate birth year 1892) and they had two sons - George (born around 1914) and Victor (born 1920 - died 2014).

Yeah. I wouldn't have mentioned it, except that Henry apparently had some sort of business affiliation with Mary Murawski, Fred's maternal grandmother -- dating, if I'm not mistaken, back to the 1930's. Unfortunately, I neglected to make a copy of the original business notice (printed in the Rockford Morning Star, IIRC) and thus far haven't been able to relocate it.

Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
Henry had a brother named John. I wonder if Fred's father John was his son. Which would make Henry Fred's great uncle I believe.

Seeing as how he was apparently exonerated from the charge mentioned in the articles above, I do have to wonder if the officials in Sonoma County were aware of it, and if so, what impact (if any) it had upon the suspicions entertained against him.
Re: Newspaper articles mentioning Manalli
So this would not be on his record? I don't think he was ever being investigated for anything. Not as far as I know anyways. I think police found out about him after he had died, when the Kim Allen drawing was found. And then the police just pretty much said "eh, he's dead already, lets not dig into his past." That's how I understand it, but I could be wrong. I think the police could have done some digging and officially solved the Santa Rosa murders.

If he wasn't convicted of the charge in question (which, to the best of my knowledge, he wasn't), it likely would have been possible for him to have it expunged from his record.
I know about the Kim Allen drawing, but didn't one of his students also put forth an accusation...prior to his death, I mean? I may have muddled the details a bit - apologies if so.
