The accomplice in the robbery of Mrs. Carmel was Harold Leftkowitz, right? If so, is he worth looking into for any reason?

Possibly. I tried looking into him a couple of months ago and didn't find anything of use. I suspect (based on the rarity of the name) that "Leftkowtiz" was a typographical error on the part of the reporter and that his actual name was "Lefkowitz." To complicate matters further, the A/P press card index has it recorded as "Leskowitz."

'Leftkowitz' or whatever his real name was probably used all variations of those spellings just as Kane used different ones and different aliases. I would love to find out who Kane was running around with in California and what kind of mischief he was getting into.

Anyone else think Kane was full of shit when he told police he was not the main party involved in the theft? It never mentions the name of the second man or does not mention an arrest of a second man.

The second man was a petty criminal named Harold Leskowitz; he fled New York shortly after Kane's arrest and was picked up in Chicago one year later on a drug warrant. I would say that Kane was the main party involved insofar as he was the one who actually plotted the theft, although, strangely, he didn't serve any time for it.

^ Kane's address in New York City was, by all accounts, an exclusive one. He must have had quite a sum of money at his disposal.

I also find it interesting that the FBI had a file on Kane as early as 1954.
