Re: Newspaper articles
Kane is interesting for many reasons. I could see Z being someone who would mingle with celebrities.
The big mystery here is Mr. Johnston and Mrs. Carmel getting married in Juarez. That's the first time I have heard of anyone going there to do anything besides score drugs. I wouldn't get married there if my life depended on it.

Re: Newspaper articles
If I had to pick the best underrated suspect it would be Larry Kane. He deserves alot more attention than he gets.

Re: Newspaper articles
Kane is a damn good suspect if you ask me. He got a good amount of attention for quite a while, but it has died down a bit it seems.

Re: Newspaper articles
Good job finding those articles. I never knew Kane had lived in New Orleans. I wonder if he was still there when all the planning for JFK's assassination was going down.
From what I have seen it looks like Kane liked to travel. He can be placed in California, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois etc etc etc.

Re: Newspaper articles
Mickey Jalke was a mobster wasn't he? I had read elsewhere about Kane maybe being tied in with the mob somehow. This makes me wonder even more.

Jelke had some sort of tie to the mob. I don't think he was actually in the mob. I think he was an accountant for the mob or something along those lines. I will Google him and find out in a bit.
William Thoresen III beat the shit out of Jelke's ex in a Vegas hotel room once. Busted up her face pretty good. There's more info on that in the Thoresen section of the site.

^ Kane's address in New York City was, by all accounts, an exclusive one. He must have had quite a sum of money at his disposal.
I also find it interesting that the FBI had a file on Kane as early as 1954.

Not sure if this was intended to be a reference to Kaye, but the description certainly fits:

Re: Newspaper articles
Wow, great finds!! Makes Kane even more interesting. Seemed like he just couldn't help himself when it came to causing trouble.
Re: Newspaper articles
On a side note, Kane's address in Manhattan played a minor role in another, unrelated (and, from what I've been able to discern, unresolved) murder case:

Re: Newspaper articles
Wow, very good find! I wouldn't be surprised if Kane was somehow involved. Or could just be he was friends with the murderer(s).
Didn't Kane have a connection to Mickey Jelke? I am really tired so I am having trouble finding the link, but I'm pretty sure it's in this thread (or maybe one of the other Kane threads?).

Indeed.
He also had a habit of maintaining multiple residences simultaneously, often in disparate locations. During his residency in New Orleans, for example, he maintained an address in Manhattan at 400 E. 55th St. under the name Lawrence Kaye (from 1957 - 1960) - this was a mere 2-to-3-minute walk from his previous NYC address located at 400 E 57th St. When he lived in Utica, NY, he was reported to have owned a "swank summer home" on Wellesley Island, NY, near Alexandria Bay...etc.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for. Thanks!

Re: Newspaper articles
Kane sure was a rascal. It's kind of weird how he never did any serious time with the record that he had.

Yeah, it's definitely shifty. I've always put it down to a combination of legal expertise (which Kane apparently possessed), social finesse (with one of Kane's associates in the '50's even going so far as to describe him as 'the greatest salesman in the world'), and the fact that he had enough cash at his disposal to retain a good lawyer.
As a side note, there were at least two additional charges brought against Kane not listed on his rap sheet - one for assaulting a police officer in 1949 in Utica, NY, and another for 'phone phreaking' in 1979.
Re: Newspaper articles
Phone phreaking? How did one get caught for something like that back then? I made tons of prank phone calls in the early and mid 90s up until star 69 and caller ID came out. This was in a very small county and I was never caught.

He tampered with his phone so that it would deflect charges for incoming calls. I'm a bit scant on the details, but somebody (the phone company, presumably) must have detected the irregularities and notified the authorities.

Re: Newspaper articles
Haha that's pretty funny. It's weird that Kane just kept getting in trouble and never learned his lesson. He definitely had a friend or two who had some sort of power to keep him out of prison. Kane is probably in my top 3 for favorite Z suspects. He seemed cocky and like he would want to taunt police.
