Re: House of Zodiac
I always thought the idea of someone filming the attack to be goofy and really far fetched, but at the same time I say anything is possible until proven otherwise.
EDIT: There will be a movie released later this year (2017) called Awakening the Zodiac, in which a married couple finds some video tapes of the Zodiac Killer. That is all the information I have found on the movie so far, but I thought I would mention it since it fits in with the topic of the Lake Berryessa attack possibly being filmed.

Re: House of Zodiac
Oh, I gotcha. Yeah a link would be good. I would love to read up on that.
Dunderhead, nothing new happening. I wrote a few people who may have been involved in the making of House of Zodiac, but nobody wrote back. I would love to get a list of every single cast and crew member because it's worth looking into. Could just be a hell of a coincidence, but maybe not.

Re: House of Zodiac
Richard Compton was one of the producer's for House of Zodiac.....
"Writer/director/producer Richard Compton was born on March 2, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his career in the early 60s making government propaganda movies for the United States Information Agency. His debut feature The French Way was never released in America. Compton followed this film with the nifty biker flick Angels Die Hard (1970), which was the first movie to be released by Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Compton then did the excellent and unjustly overlooked psycho Vietnam veterans exploitation winner Welcome Home, Soldier Boys (1971). He scored his biggest hit with the outstanding cult classic Macon County Line (1974); the unexpected enormous box office success of this movie begot a handful of similar Southern-fried "don't go down to Dixie" drive-in pictures, which include Jackson County Jail (1976), A Small Town in Texas (1976), and Nightmare in Badham County (1976). Both the tepid semi-sequel Return to Macon County (1975) starring then-unknowns Nick Nolte and Don Johnson and the strictly so-so post-nuke sci-fi survivalist opus Ravagers (1979) were regrettably mediocre, although The Ransom (1977) was a solid and gripping thriller. In the early 1980s, Compton began directing more and more for television; he's done several made-for-TV pictures and numerous episodes of such TV shows as Peacemakers (2003), JAG (1995), The Lone Gunmen (2001), Charmed (1998), Sliders (1995), Profiler (1996), Babylon 5 (1994), L.A. Law (1986), The Commish (1991), Home Improvement (1991), Baywatch (1989), Miami Vice (1984), Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), The Equalizer (1985), Hill Street Blues (1981), Hotel (1983), and T.J. Hooker (1982). Compton also did some acting in the 1960s and '70s; his acting credits include guest spots on two episodes of the original Star Trek (1966) TV show and the enjoyably trashy The Sadistic Hypnotist (1969). He was married to actress Veronica Cartwright. He died at age 69 on August 11, 2007."
In 1969 he did a movie called The Gun Runner... "Government agents hire a mercenary to infiltrate a crime ring that's selling guns to a right-wing militia in Texas." Hmmmm sounds familiar. I wonder if Richard was pals with any of the Minutemen or other such groups.
In 1971 he worked on the Boris Karloff film, Isle of the Snake People..... "Evil scientist runs a veritable army of LSD crazed zombies." Awesome!!!
Where am I going with this? Nowhere. Just pointing out that the cast & crew for House of Zodiac were all interesting folks.

Matthew Mayer wrote:James M. Tanenbaum did the special effects for the movie. It was one of the first movies he ever worked on. He still works on movies today, mostly in the sound department.

He has worked on some big flicks including Avatar, A Night at the Roxbury, The Untouchables and many many more.
I cant find a pic or a date of birth on this guy. Can anybody help?
Matthew
Tanenbaum just became a little more interesting. He worked on a 1974 movie called Phantom of Paradise. https://zodiackiller.forumotion.com/t427-phantom-of-paradise#2325
For the record, Tanenbaum looks NOTHING like the Zodiac sketches.

Re: House of Zodiac
Craig Rumar was a producer on House of Zodiac. He was Ahnold Schwarzenegger's first agent. Get to the choppa!!! He was also Sylvester Stallone's agent.
“I brought Stallone and the writer/producers together to make Rocky.”
Most the movies Rumar brought to the big screen were filmed in Spain or Europe, movies such as in 1986 Instant Justice. He also wrote and produced Escape From El Diablo and Rock-A-Bye Terror. The screenwriter has written 27 screenplays and he continues to write today.

Re: House of Zodiac
I've not heard of Hose of zodiac before just reading this thread. Just want to make sure I am straight on the facts; so the movie was released in '69? So was probably written in '68 or maybe '67? But most likely before the killings started and definately before the killer officially used the Zodiac name?

I'm not sure the exact details of the movie. I'd imagine it was written prior to 1969, but it could have been written in the early part of the year before it was filmed. I really have no idea, but odds are that it was probably written in 1968.
Re: House of Zodiac
Did anyone ever reach out to the writer of this movie?

Maybe he could send one of us a script so we can get more info on the movie itself.

Re: House of Zodiac
I e-mailed Gary Crutcher months ago and he never replied, but I'm not sure that the e-mail address I had was for the right Gary Crutcher. He's the guy I would want to talk to about the movie. Would be really cool to get a copy of the script!
Re: House of Zodiac
Ben Van Meter must have deleted his Youtube channel. It's gone, and none of his videos are on anyone else's channels either. That sucks, I really enjoyed watching his short films.
Re: House of Zodiac
I watched one of Ben Van Meter's shots on You Tube a while back after I read about him on here and it really took me back. I just missed that era but not far off. I was still into rock-n-roll and partied all the time though.

Ophion, did you try reaching out to Paul Koslo? Is that his name? The lead actor in the movie is who I mean.

No, I never found any contact info for him otherwise I would. If anyone can find an e-mail address for him, please let me know.
Re: House of Zodiac
I wrote to a guy named Gary Crutcher, not knowing if he was the right guy or not, and asked if he was ever involved in the film industry and he said:
"I have done some acting and been a model. Other than that, I done nothing else in the film industry."
My reply: "Ok, thanks. I'm trying to find a Gary Crutcher who wrote a movie called House of Zodiac in the late 60's. You don't look nearly old enough now that I realize how long ago that was."
He never wrote back, but a guy named Don Rasmussen, a friend of Gary's, wrote:
"He will always deny everything before being found out in the last possible place, famous as ever."
WHAT??? I don't know if this is even the right Gary, but Don's comment is a little strange.

Probably not, but who knows? This Gary Crutcher lives in Thailand and I'm pretty sure I had read that the guy we are looking for used to film movies in Europe and Thailand. Somebody in the film industry that I was researching not long ago had filmed a bunch of movies overseas. Let me see if I can find out if that was Crutcher.....
EDIT: Can't seem to find what I had read previously. I give up. But I'm pretty sure this guy is too young to be the right Gary Crutcher. Looks to be early 50's probably. He is an English teacher in Thailand, originally from San Diego.
Re: House of Zodiac
House of Zodiac's Richard Compton wrote and directed the 1970 movie Angels Die Hard. Frank Leo was in this movie. Frank had worked with Stirling Silliphant in a 1962 episode of the TV show Route 66.
Rita Murray also worked on both House of Zodiac and Angels die Hard.

I think a lot of the 'not quite famous' people from the industry worked together often. Seemed like they did anyways.

They did to an extent. If you look up some of these underground cult movies, you will see some of the same names on a lot of them. And that is one thing I have always pondered... Was Z in the movie business? If so, he probably traveled between the bay area and L.A. I could be way off base, I don't really know.

Weren't you looking at people who worked on movie sets in both LA and SF at one time? Not actors but crew people?

Yeah. As always, there were a few people who I would find something on that grabbed my attention. Never really found anything worthy of posting though, but did find a few interesting things.
