I know Ross put on a lot of weight as an adult, but he must have been pretty athletic as a younger guy. Swimming takes a lot of conditioning.

In December of 1955 Ross was 14 years old. Perhaps, a newspaper error or our guy just cheated in order to win a competition against younger swimmers.
