JohnFester wrote:There was even a theater on this base. I think the base was pretty much stopped being used around 1946 so I don't know what Dickey could have been doing there in 1948 although he was there.
All operations at Marfa AAF were suspended by February 1946.
The base was retained by the 818th AAF BU and later the 344th AAF BU.
On 1/31/47, the base was transferred by the 9th Air Force
to the Army District Engineering Corps at Albuquerque, NM for disposition.
Thus closed the history of MAAF as a military establishment.
Yet there were still people using the base in 1948?
David Brooks recalled, "My family comes from those parts of Texas. I have always been interested in the old air base at Marfa. My father told me he flew in to the old Marfa AAF several times, once in 1947 & two times in 1948. On two occasions, he flew on Trans Texas Airlines & once on a charter flight. So there was some commercial traffic there for a while short time after the war."
Ok so it became an airport.
The airfield was listed as "Presidio County Airport" in the 1963 TX Airport Directory (courtesy of Steve Cruse). Only 3 runways were still maintained (21R/3L, 12L/30R & 17/35, all 7,500'). The 1963 diagram shows that only 3 hangars remained standing, all other hangars & buildings having been removed. The operator was listed as KAHL Charter & Air Ambulance Service.
That's some great stuff, John. Thanks for sharing!
Mention of a young Joe Don Dickey in the Slaton Slatonite, Jan. 09, 1931:

I meant to include these in my last post but for some reason or another neglected to do so. As with the above, there's nothing here of any great significance or import, but they should (I hope, anyway) prove of sufficient interest to those of you who have been following the thread to warrant their inclusion here -

Re: Newspaper Articles
Here is a crazy idea I'm going to toss out for the heck of it. Could Marshall/Dickey have had anything to do with the DB Cooper hijacking since he worked for Boeing in Seattle? Sorry to get off topic.

Re: Newspaper Articles
Thanks for posting those. I didn't know Marshall worked in radio later on in life. I knew he did something with radio in Arizona when he was in college.

Yep! He even had his own show ("Omnibus")!
The SF Examiner article posted above mentions that he was a radio newscaster for fifteen years. Has anybody been able to verify that?

"I can remember the exact address....."
I always thought Zodiac had a good memory and that numbers, locations and things like that were important to him. Marshall remembers things like this as well as certain details about things. Other than his appearance, he sure does make for an interesting suspect.

Re: Newspaper Articles
Wasn't the Bush St address the one people made a big deal about because it was located near Stine's home or Gyke's home or something? I remember something about an address he lived at being a big deal for some reason but I guess it wasn't important enough to remember.

Doubtful since he hadn't worked for Boeing in over a decade, but it is interesting to think about especially with the new information about the tie possibly being linked to Boeing. How crazy would it be if the tie used to belong to Marshall. I'm not even sure what his job title was or what type of work he did for Boeing when he was with them.

People made a big deal out of the proximity of the Good Times switchboard (in actuality the Haight-Ashbury switchboard) to Stine's residence on Fell St. As far as I'm aware, this is the first time Marshall's Bush street address has been posted.
Re: Newspaper Articles
I want to say that I had seen a Bush St. address posted on him a long time ago, but I am really not sure if that is right. Ah, the switchboard, that's right.
Re: Newspaper Articles
Can anyone take a look at this for me???

I think it is a pdf, which I cannot access on my work computer. I think it has a photo of Dickey and his father, but I am not sure.
There are other issues of the same newspaper that I found on a google search, but they are all pdf files...

Re: Newspaper Articles
Thanks! Guess there wasn't a photo, damn. I think you had already posted all of those before.
Re: Newspaper Articles
Seems like Dickey/Marshall was often given a hard time about girls when he was younger. I know he was gay during his adult life, I wonder if he was back then as well but hid it from people.

"was my face red!
Graduate Student
For some reason, I was the only man on Kwajalein Island with a press camera and, consequently, I was frequently called on to photographically cover athletic contests, USO shows, and other events. It was at a USO show that my downfall came. I had spent the afternoon at the outdoor theater where the show was being held and during my shooting was approached by a young sailor carrying a simple reflex-type box camera equipped with a flash. “You seem to know what you’re doing,” he told me. "Mind if I follow you around?” I, of course, did not, and took him under my wing to show him the best angles and how to make the most of poor conditions, even perhaps growing a bit (but only a bit) magnanimous. That night, in the hobby-shop darkroom, we again found ourselves together, and after development of our two sets of pictures, I was secretly glad he was there. The next morning when I saw the USO troupe off at the airstrip, I handed them a promised set of pictures, all printed from my young sailor protegé’s negatives. I, you see, had neglected to pull my lens board all the way out to the infinity stop.
